The Wilmington Baritone Saxophone

When we began thinking about adding Baritone Saxophone to our line of Wilmington instruments, we set out to get the biggest, fattest tone while keeping intonation as perfect as possible. Our Wilmington is a Bari built with the Bari player in mind, but easy to play so the doubler can still get that huge rich sound, even intonation, flexibility in tone, smooth ergonomics, beautiful engraving, and solid build quality!

MusicMedic and Sax ProShop owner Curt Altarac hand picked this model after touring instrument factories throughout the world and that was only the beginning! Curt and the Sax ProShop then endeavored to make it the most playable bari on the market, and started by completely overhauling the Low A mechanism.

Low A is typically a problem because a single lever closes many pads and the experience of activating the key is full of friction, lost motion, and a sluggish and squishy end to the pad’s travel. We replaced the traditional Low A mechanism with the Alpha Key, which allows the player to effortlessly roll back and forth between the touch piece and the redesigned thumb button.

Each component of the Alpha Key is machined from solid brass and it incorporates the German Mini-ball mechanism which directly connects the Low A pad and lever with seamless key action and No lost motion. The Low A speaks without hesitation and functions with ultimate precision.

Another specially re-designed feature includes single adjustment points for the Left Hand table keys. This new design simplifies the set-up and function of Low Bb, B, and C# and keeps the entire low end of the horn speaking well and playing with a huge sound!

You get the best of both worlds: an affordable instrument with a high end treatment. It works great with modern mouthpieces, and the big open sound is flexible enough to play with extreme sensitivity and beauty or with a hard driving power and punch.
