Â
Is a Basics Done Right Course for you? Over the years, we have had participants from all over the world from different backgrounds and with different goals who benefitted from these courses.
-Musicians who want to understand their instrument’s mechanical functions and be able to do some repairs themselves.
-Band Instructors or Music Teachers who want to be able to troubleshoot and implement fixes to their students’ instruments.
-Parents or family members who have an interest in the mechanical workings of musical instruments and want to the help the musician in their lives
-Shop managers who want to cross train their technicians and introduce them into woodwinds or build upon their basic skills.
-Hobbyists who are curious about the band instrument repair trade and wants to dip their toes in the water before committing to repair school or an apprenticeship.
Â
These intensive learning courses are action packed and hands on! You’ll work with an instructor in a small class size to gain a fundamental understanding of the instrument, the tools, and supplies. Participants will need an instrument and a basic set of tools and supplies (see Tool Block below to order or make sure you have the necessary tools in your tool kit already), as well as a device or notepad to take notes.
We constructed this course to introduce the fundamentals of Clarinet repair. In this fast-paced experience, we will cover:
Bench Layout, Intro to Tools, Clarinet Anatomy & Terminology, Disassembly & Re-Assembly, Cleaning, Cork and materials installation and adjustment, Pads, installation and adjustment, Springs, installation and adjustment, Mechanical issues, Advanced topics and all questions answered!Â
Participants will need the basic set of tools required to participate in the course before the first day of the course. Participants should also have a Bb Clarinet of their choice to work on with the class during the course. All participants are eligible to purchase tools, repair kits, and instrument repair supplies at a reduced cost.
This summer our clarinet professor Miles DeCastro of North Country Winds will go over all of these great resources this course has to offer! Miles is a professional technician as well as the Instrument Repair Technician at The Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, where he teaches courses in instrument repair technology, and is responsible for repairing and maintaining over 1200 instruments!Â
