For years we've been talking about making a neck in the Sax ProShop. We understand the taper, we understand the shape, and we know exactly what we want the finished product to be. We've been modifying necks in the shop to improve intonation and tone. We have a new super-great lathe with a tapering attachment and DRO and we are ready to take the next step.
Our plan is to take a piece of steel, make a mandrel, wrap it in brass, pull it through a draw plate, and solder all the parts to it to create a functional neck made from sheet brass only.
Of course, it only makes sense to make a 12M neck.
Ultimately, we want to be able to create necks with any thickness of material and any taper. I know this is going to work, because we are already modifying necks to such a degree that creating one from scratch shouldn't be an issue.
I started a photo album on facebook where I will share pictures we take along the way. If you have any input for me or thoughts/ideas to share, email me any time! I'd be happy to hear from you.
